Chapel Hill-Carrboro KM Group

Openings: Has a waiting list

Group organizers: Tom Howlett and Sarah Tillis

Group description:
– The intentions of this group are to deepen our understanding of the dharma, develop greater insight into the conditioned patterns that hinder us, and provide inspiration for our daily practice.
– The development of trust and intimacy is essential to this process and to our sharing openly and caringly, including experiences that arise within the group. This will allow us to open our hearts and share our truth with greater wisdom and compassion.
– In our discussions, we follow Triangle Insight’s Mindful Sharing Guidelines, which we read at each meeting.

Format: We begin with a period of meditation, followed by group discussion. Discussions include readings and dharma podcasts, and we explore our practice experiences on and off the cushion.

Attendance:
– While all of us may need to miss meetings from time to time, a commitment to regular attendance is important for group development and process.
– If a member decides not to continue with the group, they will let the group know this. We ask that they consider coming to group to terminate with the group, and we support the member’s doing what will be most helpful for them at that time.

Meeting time:
– While meeting on Zoom, we meet every Sunday morning, 9:30 – 11:00 am.
– When we were meeting in person, we met 1st and 3rd Sunday mornings, 9:30-11:30 am.

Location: We are currently meeting by Zoom. When the group decides it’s safe to return to meeting in person, we will meet in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area.

Group size: Maximum of 10

Raleigh KM Group

Openings: Has openings for new members

Group Organizer: Etta Barksdale

Group Description and Agreements:
– The intentions of this group are to deepen our understanding of the dharma and provide inspiration for our daily practice.– This will be supported by the development of trust and intimacy, which will allow us to share more openly and deeply.
– All those who join should be willing to support the spiritual growth of members of the group.
– Our KM group operates by these Group Agreements.

Group Format:
– Group meetings include: 20 minutes of meditation; review of Mindful Sharing Guidelines; check-in of “how’s your practice/how’s your life”; dharma discussion based on the group’s chosen piece; and then closing meditation and group business check-in.
– Before joining, new members should be familiar with this format.

Attendance: While all of us may need to miss meetings from time to time, a commitment to weekly attendance is important for group development and process.

Decision to Leave Group:
– If a member decides to leave the group, they will let the group know.
– We encourage the member to attend group for a final sit, as a way of honoring the journey we have taken together. However, we support the member’s doing what will be most helpful for them at that time.

Sutta Study KM Group

Openings: Has openings for new members

Group organizer: Mike Hall

Group administrator: Mike Hall

Group description:
– We are a peer-led Kalyana Mitta group exploring the suttas relevant to early Buddhism, and sometimes other Buddhist traditions.
– Our approach has been to select a compilation of the suttas and assign a reading from the source to serve as a launching pad for discussion. We not only seek to understand the suttas but also to relate them to our personal practice and the flourishing of the sangha.

Group Format:
– The meeting starts with a short period of meditation and a review of Triangle Insight’s Mindful Sharing Guidelines, followed by open discussion of assigned readings. The format is evolving as we gain more experience being together.
– This a peer-led group. We take turns moderating meetings. The group makes decisions collectively on future topics and materials.

Attendance:
– While all of us may need to miss meetings from time to time, a commitment to regular attendance is important for group development and process.
– A member should promptly let the rest of the group know if it’s not possible to continue attending. Direct communication with the group about a decision to discontinue is highly preferred.

Meeting time: The fourth Sunday of each month, 7 pm – 9 pm

Location: Meetings will be by Zoom until further notice.

Group size: 8
